Anyone who knows our Makan Kaki, The Fabulous Baker Boy Juwanda Hassim, knows how much he adores Chinese Rojak and this is his go-to stall when he’s in need of a fix. Be warned though, this place is wildly popular and sees a constant stream of customers, patiently queueing up for this delicious savoury-sweet local fruit salad!
No wonder – the guy mixing up all the essential ingredients seems to have the magic touch when it comes to balancing all the flavours.
Of course, you have pineapple, yam bean (bang kwang), cucumber, bean curd puffs (tau pok), red ginger plant bud (bunga siantan), bean sprouts, and dough fritters (you char kway which is toasted on the spot in small batches so everything is fresh), but goodness, the SAUCE is amazing!
It’s the perfect balance of sweet, salty, spicy, tangy from prawn paste, chilli, lime juice, sugar. Everything is mixed thoroughly and gets an even coating of the pungent, prawny sauce, as the man pok-pok-poks away with his wooden spoon in the large wooden bucket! Finally, the rojak gets Juwanda’s favourite – hefty, generous scatterings of crushed roasted peanuts. BEHOLD!
