Our Makan Kaki, Wild Rocket’s Willin Low, is back to reveal a delicious discovery – you can thank him later! As a self-confessed “sucker for all things nostalgic”, he was delighted recently, to come across some scrumptious Soon Kueh – heavy on the flavour and yes, nostalgia factor!
Did you know Soon Kueh means steamed pastries stuffed with bamboo shoot (soon), but the kind we eat is normally stuffed with turnip (bang kwang), NOT bamboo? Why? Because bamboo shoots are more expensive and more difficult to handle, smell and all. But if you’re hankering after a taste of Soon Kueh’s authentic, original past, this is the place to visit.
Wander over to this Bukit Merah stall which is rather well-known for its ang ku kueh and yes, order up some, but be sure to ask for their soon kueh as well. When you place your order for soon kueh, they’ll ask you which type you want (they have both the turnip & bamboo varieties). Go for the version with the real “soon” – bamboo shoot stuffed, of course!
As Willin puts it, “go for real soon kueh soon!” – this place is probably the only place in Singapore that still produces this authentic local snack!
