Crystal Dumplings

Listen to this week’s episode again!

SEE:

Foreground: Savoury turnip / Background: Sweet red bean

This week, join our foodie friend Willin Low on his hunt for a bit of childhood nostalgia. He remembers his mother buying this translucent-skinned delicacy for his grandfather, but hasn’t been able to find that taste of his growing up years. Till now…
If you, like Willin, have been looking for really excellent Shui Jing Bao, or Crystal Dumplings, try the ones at Alexandra Village Food Centre.
They do two versions. First of all, there’s the savoury kind, stuffed with a filling much like soon kueh, with turnip and mushroom, served with chilli sauce.
Then there’s Willin’s favourite – the sweet version, filled with a gorgeous tau sar, or red bean paste. It’s so delicate, so wobbly, the bean paste clearly visible, peeking through the fine translucent skin of the dumpling, just waiting to ooze out on first bite. Heavenly!
Just remember to get there early because these tender little morsels sell out just after lunch time.
