This week, our Makan Kaki & Hotdog Guy Kelly Koh takes us to a childhood/ family haunt that even his grandparents used to visit for traditional home-cooked and zichar dishes. Many will remember Hillman Restaurant, which started in Cantonment Road, but which has since moved to Kitchener Road. Clearly, this is a restaurant that has seen families of Singaporeans through several generations of good eating!
For Kelly, in all his years of dining there as a child and now, as an adult with his own family, 2 dishes stand out for him. First of which, is the Claypot Beef, or as the Cantonese call it, Ngau Lam. Chunks of flavour-packed beef and tendon stewed to tender-perfection in a earthern claypot. There is a heady aroma from fragrant garlic and the rich, delicious gravy is so addictive – you’ll want to slather it on everything! That’s probably why back in the day, Kelly’s parents used to bring along their own containers to takeaway this comforting, nutritious beef dish!
Next must-try is the super-tender, boneless paper-wrapped chicken, or Ji Pao Gai. Some mad skills are involved here to seal in those chicken juices!
While those are Kelly’s 2 favourites on the menu, there are so many tasty dishes that will have you going back for more. These are people who have been doing good, honest, simple, yet delicious food for decades!
