Taufik Batisah on Hot Chicken, Steak & Nasi Padang

In this video, Taufik Batisah introduces Denise to some of the signature items on the menu of his restaurant, Chix Hot Chicken, including the INSANE HOT CHICKEN (so spicy it made them both cry!)

These sliders are arguably one of the BEST things on the menu! Huge, juicy pieces of boneless chicken, coated with a super crispy batter, sandwiched between two small, pillowy buns and slathered in their house-made tangy pink mayo. You can order the chicken in the level of spice you prefer and it packs a powerful flavour punch. So, so good!

Wings of insanity! The spice level will make you cry involuntary tears even if you have a tolerance for spiciness! But that dry spice seasoning is still searingly addictive and full of flavour. The chicken wings are crispy on the outside, moist and tender on the inside. And Nashville-style fried chicken always comes with a piece of white bread (hello carbs!) to balance the heat and soak up the oil, as well as pickles, the sour tang of which cuts through the grease for a zingy burst of freshness and crunchiness.

Taufik absolutely loves steak and for some of the best Halal Steaks, you’ve got to try Steak Me by Chef Amri who was also behind Le Steak opposite Rex Cinema. It’s since been revamped and relocated to Jalan Kayu, where Chef Amri continues to serve up quality meats and all the accoutrements. Taufik is partial to a juicy sirloin or striploin and if the meat is top quality, he likes it done medium rare with mash, asparagus & garlic butter or even some spicy pepper sauce.

When Taufik’s in the mood for rice, then it’s got to be Nasi Padang and one of his favourites is just down the road from his restaurant – Sabar Menanti II. They’ve been serving hungry customers since 1920, so this family-run business clearly knows how to do Nasi Padang right!

Taufik’s essentials to go with the hot steaming rice are:

Beef Rendang, Sambal Goreng Pengantin (literally means wedding couple – usually made with chicken or beef livers, tofu and prawns), Chicken, Begedil and Fried Paru (beef lung), all liberally doused in Lauk Lemak (coconut gravy).

The Ikan Bakar also comes highly recommended. Deep fried in a turmeric flour and then smothered in onion, green chilli and thick black kicap manis, with a squeeze of lime? Delicious!
