Hello Makan Kakis!

This week, we have a very special guest on the show – Broadway Beng, Sebastian Tan! He returns to the stage with a brand new show – Broadway Beng® GROWING gOLD brought to you by Dream Academy!

Catch up on what to expect from the show (psst: I’ve dusted off my dancing shoes and joining the cast as a Chiobu!). Also, with a brother who runs a Chinese restaurant in England, an uncle who has a popular Ngoh Hiang stall in Chong Pang and an aunt who is a butcher, Sebastian certainly comes from a family of foodies! As such, we chat about all things delicious, including his fantasy dinner party, why actress Meryl Streep would be his special guest and what food he’d serve her!

Plus: where do theatre people go to eat? Days are long and rehearsals/ shows often end late, so supper places are best! Scroll down for Sebastian’s recommendation for his favourite late-night kwap chap & download our podcasts below for a listen.

Supper is a must when you finish late from rehearsals or a stage performance, just ask anyone who works in Theatre! Namely, Sebastian who recommends this place in Bishan Street 22 that’s always a popular choice for a late-night meal (and not with theatre folk!). There’s always a queue, but it moves pretty fast and the yummy Kway Chap reward at the end is worth the wait.

A cooked food + economy rice stall by day, 284 Kway Chap morphs into a supper stall serving up all manner of braised pork and tofu products (along with a few extras), plus bowls of brothy kway (wide & flat rice noodle sheets).

Hi Makan Kakis! This week, our foodie friend Lyn Lee of Awfully Chocolate & Sinpopo Brand returns to take us back to her beloved Katong neighbourhood for one of her favourite zi char places.

Sin Hoi Sai Eating House on East Coast Road is a familar Katong family-run business that Lyn has been patronising for a long time, so much so that matriach Madam Yap has become a friend. According to Lyn, Madam Yap has been working since she was 14 years old and her brother is the head chef in kitchen of the zichar restaurant they started in 1981.

Covid-19 safety measures and dining restrictions really hurt them, but it’s heartening to see them still soldiering on and making efforts to pivot. Whilst dining groups remain painfully small, kerb-side pickups and online orders/ delivery are available.

So what’s good to eat at Sin Hoi Sai? Read on for Lyn’s recommendations!
